Hybrid Invasion of Europe Begins with Auris Hybrid

Toyota Auris Hybrid

Toyota Auris Hybrid

Toyota begins selling the Auris Hybrid in the U.K. on July 1. This is a milestone for a number of important reasons.

First, it"s the first time a full hybrid has been targeted for the heart of the European market. The Auriswhich uses the same technical architecture as the Toyota Prius is a mainstream economical model, with a position in the market roughly similar to the Corolla. The hybrid version is very similar to the conventional Auris. The main differences are: lower ride height for better aerodynamics (0.28 Cd); reshaped bumpers and longer rear spoiler (also for aero); and a smaller gas tank and trunk to accommodate the nickel metal hydride battery pack. Cosmetic changes include a chrome grille, LED driving lights and hybrid blue-tint badges.

Why else is it important? Because the Auris Hybrid is the first full hybridat least according to Toyotato be produced in Europe, specifically for the European market. The Auris Hybrid went into production earlier this month in Burnaston, England. (Actually, Volkswagen began building the Touareg Hybrid in Slovakia in April.)

Europe has historically preferred diesels to hybrids, as a green fuel efficiency choicebut this marks the beginning of a shift to hybrids. The Auris Hybrid could help Toyota bypass Fiat to become Europe"s low-CO2 champion. The Auris hybrid"s CO2 output is just 89 gram per kilometer.

ABOUT PROGRAMME As an effort to further deepen the campaign of alternative renewable energy -- solar Energy in Nigeria, Go SolarAfrica project, an initiative of SMEFUNDS set out to increase awareness on Solar power for the poor. GoSolarAfrica team will host Nigeria's first Solar Powered Viewing Centre for the FIFA 2010 World Cup tournament at Iwerokun community of Eti Osa East local government area of Lagos State all through the Football season. This peculiarity of this location stems from that fact that is IWEROKUN COMMUNITY does not have access to electricity, and like many similar communities across Africa, the youth of IWEROKUN will be fenced out of the global audience of the 2010 world cup. To holding back this from happening, the go SolarAfrica team is making the community Live and Green during this season. Israel's high powered potato

Researchers in Jerusalem for the Israeli company Yissum have developed super simple, sustainable, organic electric batteries which are powered by treated potatoes. The new potato battery research has recently been published in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy. The apparently highly efficient battery is made from zinc and copper electrodes and a slice of boiled potato. The act of boiling the potato increased the electric power around 10 fold in comparison to an untreated potato, giving it power for days, and sometimes weeks depending on the conditions. The potato batteries are also, of course, considerably cheaper than regular commercial battery cells. The technology has officially been made available free of charge to the developing world.

Exclusive: Chevy Volt Is More Hybrid Than Previously Thought

2011 Chevy Volt

For the first 40 miles, the Chevy Volt is all electric. For the next 300 miles, it"s some blend of EV and hybrid.

When GM first introduced the Chevy Volt concept in 2007, it invented a new term to describe how the car works: extended-range electric vehicle (ER-EV). It was a tactic to distance the Volt from conventional hybrids like the Toyota Prius, and to rightfully show legislators that the Volt is not just a hybrid with a bigger battery.

New Chevy Volt Site

Check out PluginCars.com's dedicated site for Volt news, shopping info and online community.

The EV term stuck to the Volt, because the wheels are exclusively powered by the car"s 150-horsepower electric motor for the first 40 miles, while there is sufficient charge in the 16-kilowatt hour battery pack. That hasn"t changed. But in an exclusive interview with HybridCars.com, Rob Peterson, General Motors spokesperson, would not rule out the Volt"s use of its on-board gas engine to power the wheels under some conditions.

SEfficiency is the Volt"s mantra,⬝ Peterson said. SWe will take whatever method we have to get there.⬝ Asked if Volt engineers would use the gas engine to power the wheelsa signature of a parallel hybrid systemif it meant greater efficiency, Peterson replied, SYou could do it. Absolutely. It"s a matter of software.⬝ He added, SYou have some motors, a planetary gear box, there"s a variety of things we can do in there.⬝

While not revealing details about the Volt"s technical design, Peterson made it clear that the Chevy Volt employs some degree of hybrid efficiency strategies while the car is in so-called "charge-sustaining" mode.

Toyota Takes Swift Action on Lexus Hybrid Fuel Tank Concerns

Lexus HS250h

Lexus HS250h

Toyota is recalling 17,000 units of its 2010 Lexus HS250h hybrid, due to a fuel tank issue. The company will also halt production and sales until a remedy can be found.

During a test conducted by an agency contractor, fuel spillage from the vehicle exceeded federal regulations. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the problem could occur when the car is Srotated on its longitudinal axis to each successive increment of 90 degrees following an impact crash test.⬝

The problem is currently being investigated by Toyota. By conducting the recall, and the halt to production and sales, Toyota is exercising an immediate response and a high degree of caution. The company was criticized earlier this year for a sluggish response to widely publicized issues with runaway acceleration of various models, and a Sbrake feel⬝ problem with some its hybrids.

Investigations by Toyota and federal agencies failed to produce evidence of a verifiable or persistent safety problem with acceleration or braking. Since the public scare earlier this year, the story has almost completely vanished from the media.

Honda Fit Hybrid: Honda's Low-Cost High-MPG Hybrid, Finally?

Honda Fit

This review of the Honda Fit Hybrid, which was originally published in June 2009, was updated on June 25, 2010. The comments date back to original posting.

Honda hasn't had much luck with its recent hybrids. The Honda Insight and upcoming Honda CR-Z Hybrid coupe fell short of promises to combine a great price with leading fuel economyor in the case of the CR-Z, with a sporting drive. The Honda Fit Hybridcoming out this fall in Japan, but no timing yet announced for the U.S.could be Honda's chance to finally create a gas-electric winner.

First of all, the conventional Honda Fit platform is a major critical and popular success. It has a smart but playful appearance, and a deceivingly large and versatile five-passenger interior. If Honda can add a hybrid powertrain at a relatively low premiumfor a final price well below all the hybrid competitionthen the company might have reached the right dollar-per-mpg ratio. The Honda Fit Hybrid's prospects wouldn't be hurt if gas prices starting making a rise by the time its delivered, maybe in 2011?

In The Works For A While

HybridCars.com reported was back in 2006 that Honda was planning a hybrid version of the Fit. That news flash was based on an exclusive interview with an unidentified sourcebut company officials denied the report. "We're not thinking of a Jazz (Fit) hybrid right now,⬝ said Takeo Fukui, Honda president and CEO, in December 2006. STo us, the Jazz has sufficient fuel efficiency with the current gasoline engine.⬝

Fukui reversed his story in May 2008 when he told reporters that the spike in crude oil prices convinced Honda that "a Fit hybrid is now starting to make sense."

Ford Aims for 100-Percent Petroleum-Free Compostable Cars

SI want to say just one word to you: Plastics!⬝ That might have been good advice to new college graduates a generation ago, but today that could be replaced with this word: SBiofoam.⬝

Most conversations about the environmental impact of cars focus on drivetrainshybrid versus diesel versus electric, etc. But the use of new bio-based materialsused in everything from seats to dashboardsalso have a big impact on energy, as well as the environmental safety of passengers. That"s why Ford is expanding its use of bio-based soy foam through nearly all of its vehicle lineup this year as part of an ongoing effort to use more renewable and recyclable materials.

Debbie Mielewski

Ford Technical Leader of Plastics Research Debbie Mielewski observes a polyol separation in the laboratory.

Ford"s use of bio foam has helped the company reduce its petroleum oil usage by more than 3 million pounds annually and carbon dioxide emissions by 11 million pounds. In a press release, Debbie Mielewski, technical director, Plastics Research Group at Ford, said, SOne day I hope to see the automotive world go totally compostable, removing the use of petroleum-based parts 100 percent.⬝

Hyundai Sets Out Aggressive Plans for Hybrids, Some that Plug In

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid's distinguishing characteristics are 40-mpg highway mileage and its wide-open front grille.

The evidence is mounting that Hyundai plans to be a major play in the hybrid market. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, which is expected to get better than 40 MPG on the highway, will hit dealerships later this year. And as we reported in April, the Korean carmaker has a dedicated hybrid in the works. The new hybrid-specific lithium-battery-powered model will have a unique name and designand will attempt to beat the Toyota Prius in terms of fuel efficiency. The company firmly believes that a hybrid needs a specific Sgreen⬝ look in order to compete for customers.

Now, The Detroit Bureau is reporting that Hyundai is Splanning a big assault on the growing global market for gasoline-electric vehicles,⬝ including plug-in hybrids. Within a decade, Hyundai expects that hybrids will make up 20 percent of its total global sales volume. Hyundai expects the biggest markets for hybrids to be Europe and Japan. SWe are spending a fortune on hybrid development,⬝ said Hyun-Soon Lee, the automaker"s vice chairman.

Hyundai Blue Will plug-in hybrid concept

A new hybrid-only model from Hyundai will use the same dimensions and packaging as the Hyundai Blue Will plug-in hybrid concept.

However, don"t expect full electric cars from Hyundai, according to The Detroit Bureau. Woong-chul Yang, president of Hyundai"s R&D operation, contends that lithium batteries still are still too costly and do not offer adequate range. SWe"d need seven times the level of performance at 20 times less price,⬝ he said. Hyundai officials said that a plug-in hybrid that"s able to go all-electric for the typical commute is a likely direction for the company.

Gentlemen, Switch on Your Invertors

Porsche

Porsche"s GT3 R Hybrid led the Nürburgring 24 Hours race in Germany with a little less than two hours remaining when the gasoline engine failed, sidelining the car.

Electrics and hybrids are speeding into motorsports

On May 16, with a little less than two hours remaining in the Nürburgring 24 Hours race in Germany, a Porsche was leading. No surprise, Porsche race cars had won the four previous 24 hour races at this classic endurance event.

But this Porsche was different than the previous winners and the other 32 Porsche entrants on the track that day; it was a hybrid race car.

Based on the latest 911 racer, the GT3 R Hybrid is a type of hybrid most of us will never drive. Using a technology developed for Formula One (F1) racing series, the high performance vehicle replaces the passenger seat with a flywheel generator that spins up to 40,000 rpm. The generator captures and stores energy each time the vehicle brakes. Then, when the driver needs additional speed for passing or exiting a corner, a tap of a button gives a 160 horsepower boost for 6-8 seconds via two electric motors mounted in the front wheels.

As Government Decisions Loom, Ethanol Fights for its Life

ethanol factory

Congress, the EPA and environmental groups may be on the verge of seriously curtailing corn ethanol adoption in the United States. This week, the EPA again decided to postpone a decision on whether to increase the maximum allowable blend of ethanol in regular gasoline from 10 to 15 percent. Automakers have been fighting the increase for some time, claiming that it could cause engine damage. The EPA says it needs more time to study the issue.

The Renewable Fuels Associationone of several lobbying arms of the ethanol industryissued a harsh rebuke of the decision, calling the EPA's postponement "shameful" and "a dereliction of duty."

Judgment Day for Ethanol

The EPA isn't the only government body that the ethanol industry is relying on. By the end of 2010, several of the programs and regulations that keep the corn ethanol industry afloat will expire unless Congress acts to extend or replace them.

First, there are the so-called "blender's credits" given out to oil companies for mixing ethanol into their gasoline, which make up the bulk of the subsides for the past five years but are set to expire at the end of 2010. Those credits have helped pump $17 billion into the industry since 2005, but since gasoline producers are already required by law to blend ethanol into their product, the subsidy is largely redundant.

There's also the matter of a $0.60 per gallon tariff on imported ethanol that effectively keeps all of the ethanol sold in the United States domestically produced. Brazil, which is the world's second leading ethanol producer, recently lifted its biofuels tariff in the hopes that the United States would do the same. Unless Congress decides to take action by the end of the year, the tariff is set to expire, opening up the market to imports.

Nissan LEAF and Nissan Hybrids: Nationwide By Late Next Year

Nissan Altima Hybrid

Nissan Altima Hybrid

Despite reports to the contrary, Nissan is not anti-hybrid. In fact, the Nissan Altima Hybrid is arguably has just the right combination of power, style and fuel economy to be a mainstream hit. So why isn"t the Altima Hybridwith its compelling combo of power, handling, style, and fuel economywell known from coast-to-coast?

Because it"s only available in nine states: California and the eight states that have adopted California's emissions rules: Oregon, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. (Even with its limited availability, the Altima Hybrid outsold the Honda Civic Hybrid and Toyota Highlander Hybrid in May 2010. See our hybrid and diesel market dashboard.)

When the 2011 Altima Hybrid is introduced later this year, it will once again be limited to those nine states. This probably has a lot to do with Nissan wanting to downplay the viability of hybrids, as it focuses on a rollout of its all-electric Nissan LEAF. Keep in mind that the LEAF for the first year or so will also be limited to key markets on the West Coast, in Arizona and Tennessee. (The Chevy Volt is also geo-targeted to California, Michigan and Washington, D.C.)

As Government Decisions Loom, Ethanol Fights for its Life

ethanol factory

Congress, the EPA and environmental groups may be on the verge of seriously curtailing corn ethanol adoption in the United States. This week, the EPA again decided to postpone a decision on whether to allow the maximum allowable blend of ethanol in regular gasoline to increase from 10 to 15 percent.

Chrysler Plans for Hybrids, EVs and Natural Gas Vehicles, Probably

Dodge Ram Pickup

Chrysler will soon start testing a plug-in hybrid Dodge Ram Pickup, but it's not clear when it would arrive in showrooms.

Last November, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne and his lieutenants spent a long day laying out the details of their plans for a new Chrysler that would compete on all fronts, including cars that would compete in a growing field of hybrid and electric cars. Since then, an electric version of the Fiat 500 has made the round of auto showsand is scheduled to go on sale in 2012. The company also announced plans for a small test fleet of Dodge Ram plug-in hybrid pickupsbacked by a $48 million Department of Energy grant. (The conventional hybrid version of the Ram was canceled, after years of development.) And, of course, the company still sells the GEM, a line of neighborhood electric vehicles. Other than that, the company has been silent on its green car plans while it struggles to right its balance sheets and bring new volume product to market.

At the Automotive News Detroit Green Car Conference last week, Paulo Ferrero, Chrysler's senior vice president for powertrain, might have elaborated on the company's strategy for electrificationsince speakers from Nissan, BMW and Think were talking about their companies' EV strategies already being implemented. His presentation did include a slide or two on plug-ins, but with no new information other than a commitment to "develop a range of technologies for hybrid/electrification across various platforms." That's pretty vague and clearly not a commitment to deliver vehicles on a timeline with the competition.

Fiat 500

According to Fiat-Chrysler, an all-electric version of the Fiat 500 minicar could be arriving as soon as 2012.

Ferrero did drop a big surprise: natural gas vehicles! It turns out Fiat has CNG powertrains in a full range of vehicles already in Europe (where government incentives and utility support make them an attractive option) and they might find their way over herealong with multi-air engines and a variety of improvements to gas-powered engines and transmissions promising a 25 percent overall fleet average fuel economy improvement for Chrysler's fleet by 2014.

Would You Like Your Electric Car With or Without a Gas Engine?

Chevy Volt Underpinnings

The underpinnings of the Chevy Volt, which carries an electric motor and a gas engine.

When the Nissan LEAF and Chevy Volt launch later this year, green car buyers will have a total of three flavors of electric-drive vehicles to choose from: conventional hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and pure electric cars. At that point, consumers will need to sort out the competing factors of cost, driving range, and the importance of going 100-percent electric.

On one side of the debate, makers of plug-in hybrids (or extended-range electric vehicles) argue that electric vehicles without a gas engine on board (allowing for hundreds of miles of driving between charging) just won't cut it. The opposing view from carmakers with pure electric cars is that drivers quickly get accustomed to cars with 100 miles of range, which is more than adequate for nearly all driving. They say why add the complexity of two systems?

Both sides had a chance to make their arguments at last week's Automotive News Green Car Conference. Micky Bly, GM's executive director for global electrical systems, clearly believes that electric cars need extended range. In his opinion, pure electric cars will appeal to a limited group of early adopters. "I feel strongly the early-adopter movement is done in North America,⬝ Bly said. He added that mass market EVs have to be capable of serving as a household"s primary vehicle. SI think pure battery electric vehicles are not going to be niche vehicles, but they're not going to be a primary vehicle."

Ford"s chief of vehicle electrification Nancy Gioia, essentially agreedbut believes it"s too early to tell how demand will play it between conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric cars. Ford will offer all three, although the company believes that conventional hybrids will make up 75 percent of its electric portfolio. Few people are willing to accept Strade-offs in performance and price⬝ Gioia said.

J.D. Power: Annual U.S. Hybrid Sales Beyond 1 Million by 2015

2010 Toyota Prius

J.D. Power believes that conventional hybrids, like the Toyota Prius, will make up as much as 98 percent of cars that use battery power in 2015.

The economic recession and low gas prices recently have taken their toll on consumer interest in fuel-efficient alternative power cars. But that"s about to turn around according to research firm J.D. Power.

In a new report, J.D. Power analysts said that global sales of electric-drive cars are expected to reach 940,000 units this year compared with 732,000 units last year, with the number jumping beyond 3 million in 2015. Despite the growth, that would represent a modest 3.4 percent of global light-vehicle sales. According to the firm, conventional hybridsrather than plug-in carsare forecast to make up the vast majority of the sales.

Hybrids in U.S. and EVs in China

The big shift will happen with conventional hybrids in the United States and electric cars in China, according to the report. J.D. Power also said it expected the U.S. to account for 55 percent of the hybrid market by 2015meaning conventional hybrid sales in the U.S. would grow from less than 300,000 in 2009, to around 1.4 million by 2015. In the United States, that could account for close to 10 percent of the total U.S. market.

Meanwhile, nearly half of the projected 500,000 sales of plug-in cars by 2015 will happen in China. J.D. Power believes that hybrids will be more popular than plug-in cars due to higher cost and limited driving range. (Obviously, this point is up for debate.)

Mixed Reviews on Honda CR-Z as Hybrid and Sports Car

Honda CR-Z at Golden Gate Bridge

Can a hybrid be as fun as a sports car? Can a sports car save fuel like a hybrid?

Honda this week gave automotive journalists their first chance behind the wheel of the 2011 Honda CR-Z Hybrid. Honda"s goal with the all-new two-seater is to combine the fuel parsimony of a hybrid with the sportiness of the company"s classic CRX coupeand to offer it as the most affordable hybrid on the market.

The fuel economy rating of the standard six-speed manual is 31/37 mpg, with the optional automatic (CVT) rated at 35/39 mpg.

"The CR-Z is as much about the driving experience as it is about our commitment to fuel efficiency and affordable hybrid technology," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales at American Honda Motor Co. "We lit the fuse on hybrids," Mendel said.

Did they succeed? On affordability, the answer is yes. The MSRP of the CR-Z, which goes on sale on Aug. 24, is not official, but is expected at less than $20,000. That does make it the lowest priced hybrid on the marketand the only one available with a manual transmission.

Honda CR-Z

But on the evaluation of the Honda CR-Z as both a sports car and as a hybrid, the reviews are mixed. And yet, there"s an underlying sentiment that Honda has made a worthwhile contribution to the hybrid field. Here"s a sampling of what auto critics had to say on the twin goals.

Peugeot-Citroen Dangles Prospect of Small Diesel-Hybrid Minivan

Peugeot 3008 HYbrid 4 small minivan

Peugeot 3008 HYbrid 4 small minivan

Last week, we reported that Mitsubishi is taking steps to produce a diesel-electric carin the form of the Lancer Evo diesel hybrid. Automotive News today reports that Peugeot-Citroen's first diesel-electric hybrid, the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid 4 small minivan, could be exported outside Europe.

The Peugeot 3008 HYbrid 4 goes on sale in Europe in March 2011. The automaker says the 3008 Hybrid 4 will produce just 99 grams per kilometer of CO2 despite offering 200 horsepower. The car's 2.0-liter diesel provides 163 horsepower to the front wheels, and an electric motor supplies 37 hp to the rear wheels. When Peugeot demonstrated the 3008 HYbrid concept at the Paris auto show in 2008, it said the vehicle could get 57 miles per gallon.

Peugeot-Citroen electric vehicles director Ayoul Grouvel told Automotive News Europe that subsidiaries in Australia, Brazil, China, Israel and Turkey are asking for hybrids. The auto markets in China and Brazil are experiencing wild growth, and would be enticing to Peugeot-Citroen.

The company believes that diesel-electric hybrids make sense to expand fuel-efficient offerings in Europe and Asia, but expects U.S. customers to choose gas-powered hybrids. And yet, U.S. hybrid fans have been screaming for a hybrid minivan for years. Could you imagine the reaction from greeny families to a small stylish hybrid minivan, with third-row seating (even if squeezed), running on biodiesel?

Lincoln MKZ Hybrid's MPG Is Official: 41 in the City

Lincoln MKZ Hybrid

Lincoln announced that the fuel efficiency rating for their first ever hybrid, the 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, is now official: 41 mpg rating in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway. The official EPA rating makes it the most fuel-efficient luxury sedan in America.

A few years ago, a luxury sedan achieving more than 40 MPG in the city would have been big news. With hybrid technology, it's quickly becoming a regular occurrence.

Ford is positioning the 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid to compete against the 2010 Lexus HS 250h. The MKZ beats the HS250h in terms of fuel economy by 6 MPG, and provides more engine power and passenger room. The MKZ"s combined gasoline engine and electric motor provide 191 net horsepower.

SThe Lincoln MKZ Hybrid offers everything our customers look for in a midsize luxury sedan, plus unsurpassed fuel economy,⬝ said Derrick Kuzak, Ford"s group vice president, Global Product Development, in a press release. The MKZ"s claim for fuel economy leadership in the luxury category may be short-lived, with the premium compact Lexus CT 200h hitting dealerships later this year or in early 2011.

Car Companies and Governments Align for Oil-Free Future

Carlos Ghosn, Phone Call

SWhen a government is interested, they call us. We don"t go to them. They call us,⬝ Carlos Ghosn said. (Photo: Brad Berman. All rights reserved.)

In the early days of the Bush administration, vice-president Dick Cheney met behind closed doors with oil companies to formulate national energy policy. A decade later, we see what happens when the government and oilies get too chummy: dangerous oil drilling and endless oil wars.

The Gulf oil spill is a catastrophe of epic proportions, but if nothing else comes out of it, the disaster could force a decisive break from the government-oil alliancewhile forging a new alignment between the state and car companies. That"s right, the same car companies that stood defiant of government fuel efficiency mandates for generations are now forming alliances to produce cars that use little or no petroleum.

In this dawning age of battery-powered vehicles, the very definition of an automobile company"s function in the economy and society is shifting. Companies that recognize the change are positioning themselves as government allies in the struggle for oil dependence. SWe are not only a carmaker. We are a sustainable mobility system provider,⬝ said Carlos Ghosn, CEO of Nissan and Renault. He was speaking in Tennessee at the occasion of Nissan breaking ground on a new lithium ion battery factoryfinanced by a $1.4 billion loan from the Department of Energy.

Car Company or Systems Provider?

Mr. Ghosn proclaimed that Nissan-Renault is not only making cars. The company will also make batteries, help recycle them, make quick charging equipmentand most importantly, provide consulting services to governments. SWe"re not only a carmaker here. We"re the provider of a system. And we are advising governments and cities about what system they should be in place in order to get the interest of the consumer,⬝ Ghosn said.

VW Goes Hybrid with Gas-Electric Jetta in 2012

2011 Volkswagen Jetta

2011 Volkswagen Jetta

In one more sign that the automotive world is shifting to electric-drive technology, Volkswagen today reconfirmed its commitment to producing a hybrid version of its popular Jetta. A gas-electric Jetta, to debut in 2012, would put another affordable mainstream hybrid option into showrooms.

Affordability is the key word, as hybrids push further into mainstream vehicle lineups. The new (gas-powered) 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, which made its global debut in New York today, is priced at $16,000, about $1,700 less than the current version. SWith the new Jetta, we"ve kept everything people liked, but also made the car more accessible to the entry-level buyer in the compact segment,⬝ said Toscan Bennett, a VW product strategist. SWe want people who had considered Jettas too expensive to put us on their shopping lists.⬝

Later this year, Volkswagen will introduce the Touareg Hybrid SUV, its first hybrid, but it will hardly be affordable. Based on pricing announced in Europe, the Touareg Hybrid could exceed $90,000 in the U.S. Moreover, it will join a crowded field of expensive luxury hybrid SUVs already on the marketand not selling particularly well.

On the other hand, a Jetta Hybrid probably will probably be priced in the low $20,000s, while offering fuel economy numbers in the mid-40 mpg range. It will represent the first time an automaker stacks up a hybrid and clean diesel option in a cost-competitive model.

China"s Push for Hybrid and Electric Cars, But Will Anyone Buy?

Beijing Traffic

Beijing traffic

In announcing an ambitious round of subsidies for green vehicles earlier this month, the Chinese government made it clear that the country isn't just paying lip service to fuel efficiency. China intends to compete both domestically and internationally in the hybrid and electric vehicle market, even if it means playing catch-up.

The domestic incentives provide discounts of $8,800 electric vehicles, $7,350 for PHEVs, and up to $36,750 for fuel cell vehicles. China was successful with a general vehicle subsidy last year that helped the country surpass the United States as the world's largest auto market for the first time in history.

At a recent U.S. China Automotive Conference, the technology gap between China and the United States on hybrids and electric vehicles generated a lot of discussion. "In terms of engineering capability, the U.S. is leading, but China is very fast in adopting the technology," said mechanical engineering professor, Jun Ni, to the Detroit Free Press.

As an export-driven economy, China knows that if it wants to compete in the international car market, it will have to make quality cars that are safe, fuel efficient, and cost competitive. Chinese exports have never had a problem competing on price, but when it comes to autos, Americans will be concerned about the safety and reliability of Chinese carsregardless of how much money they might save.

Prius Success Is All About Looks, Says Dan Ariely

2010 Toyota Prius

2010 Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius is by far the most popular hybrid car because it"s immediately recognizable as an earth-friendly car. At least, that"s the explanation offered by Dan Ariely, the behavioral economist who wrote Predictably Irrational. Ariel was in Seattle last week on a tour for his new book, The Upside of Irrationality.

Dan ArielyDan Ariely

Ariely"s books combine neuroscience, economics, and personal observations to explain how emotionsrather than rational economic logicdrive us to make odd choices in life.

"This is my personal observation," said Ariely, "When I drive and I see people driving Priuses, they look to me like they smile more than others." Ariely explained that Prius drivers want to stand out, to pat themselves on the back as they drive down the road, and to make it crystal clear that they"re driving a hybrid. (This observation has been made many times before, most notably by the creators of Comedy Central"s South Park, who portrayed hybrid drives as smug snobs. Very funny stuff.)

In announcing an ambitious round of subsidies for green vehicles earlier this month, the Chinese government made it clear that the country isn't just paying lip service to fuel efficiency. China intends to compete both domestically and internationally in the hybrid and electric vehicle market, even if it means playing catch-up.

The domestic incentives provide discounts of $8,800 for plug-in electric vehicles, $7,350 for hybrids, and up to $36,750 for fuel cell vehicles.

Chinese exports have never had a problem competing on price, but when it comes to autos, American people will be concerned about the safety and reliability of Chinese carsregardless of how much money they might save.

Toward a More Efficient Use of Renewable Energy Sources

Renewable energy. In one hour we get enough sunlight on the earth to power the planet for a year. The molecular design of new materials for efficient harvesting of photons from the sun is promising. But storing that energy requires the next generation of batteries: sustainable, safe, and high-energy. Alan Heeger, Lon Bell and Jean-Marie Tarason explore new ways to meet our energy needs. Series: Summit on Energy Efficiency [11/2009] [Science] [Show ID: 17378]

Another First for Mitsubishi? A Diesel-Hybrid Lancer Evo

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

It"s just a rumor, but the potential move by Mitsubishi to give its Lancer Evolution a diesel-hybrid powertrain is interesting for several reasons.

First of all, Mitsubishi is not afraid to be first on an innovative green technology. The Mitsubishi i-MiEV was the first all-electric car to hit the mainstream market. That was in Japan last year, but it"s heading to North America next year. Given its smart-like size and regular-sized price tag, the i-MiEV is very likely to be a niche car for urban dwellers. That"s okay. It"s one more solid option for EV buyers. The micro-car is cute and fun and might even develop a cult-like following. Even if it doesn"t sell in big numbers, the i-MiEV could catapult the Mitsubishi brand in front of U.S. consumers.

The existing Lancer Evolution is also an iconic niche car with a fanatical following. The SEvo,⬝ which has been around for nearly two decades, transforms a compact economy car into high-performance rideby adding a powerful turbocharged engine, an all-wheel-drive system and numerous tweaks to improve handling and braking. Mitsubishi engineers need to modify that formula againin a greener directionif the Evo is going to pass tougher CO2 regulations hitting Europe and the U.S. Combining clean diesel technology and a hybrid gas-electric drivetrain in the next generation Evo could cut CO2 emissions to less than 200g/km, while delivering 0 60 performance under five seconds.

Symbolic Value

Sure, this is one more example of a hybrid that puts performance first and fuel efficiency second. The current 291-horsepower U.S. version of the Evo only manages a combined 20-mpg average. We"re guessing that the double-whammy of diesel and hybrid could boost the mileage beyond 30 MPG. But if the engineers can slightly downsize the engine, and make up the performance with a boost of diesel torque and battery power, then the model could approach a doubling of fuel economy over the conventional version.

PluginCars.com To Take First Drive of Production Nissan LEAF

Wheel of Nissan LEAF

Behind the wheel of the LEAF.

The all-electric Nissan Leaf is one of the most anticipated cars to hit the market in generations. We were among the group of media to test early production Smule⬝ prototypes of the LEAF in April 2009 (for the New York Times). We were behind the wheel of another prototype again in November last year.

The big question is how the actual production car will drive. Well, we have the scoop on that story because Nick Chambers, who writes for PluginCars.comour sister siteis heading off to Japan next week, as he becomes the first writer-blogger to take a spin in the LEAF. He'll be sending back full reports with photos and video. SI see it as a duty to make sure that I get as much information as possible and disseminate it as widely as possible,⬝ Nick writes.

>> Check out what else is on Nick"s mind as he prepares for the big day. Check back with PluginCars.com next week as we post exclusive pics, videos and stories.

And tell Nick what he should be finding out.
